The 38 best foods to try in Tallinn (2024)

This Estonian restaurant offers elevated fare and wine, making it a popular spot for locals and foodies alike. The atmosphere is vintage-inspired and the service is friendly. Table service is available for those who want to enjoy their meal in peace, though the restaurant also has a street parking lot that's accessible during peak hours.

What a lovely surprise! The food was excellent - we tried the herring with black bread and blueberry soup with cashew cream for dessert. Both show creative takes on traditional Baltic dishes. The staff were warm and friendly, as the atmosphere of this place. Would love to return on my next visit in Tallinn. It's advisable to book in advance.

Phenomenal dining experience. Fresh, delicious, unique dishes cooked to perfection. Immaculate presentation. Charming & attentive staff make you feel welcome and happy. The restaurant decor is brilliant with wonderful ambience. Loved everything.

Kevin L — Google review

Food was very good! Portion size was big enough, at least I left feeling satisfied. Elk was super good and the sauce was especially great. Would come again! The service was good although quite slow, but we came in quite busy lunch time and there was only one waitress serving the outside tables so it was understandable. My partner's medium rare steak was also more like medium+, but otherwise her meal was very good.

Hand down, the best food I've ever tasted. Friendly staff happily accommodated my family, including our outspoken one-year-old. Beautiful dishes and inviting atmosphere. The rooms were beautiful and spacious. Our only frustration was that we received only one room key, and several kitchen items were broken. This, however, did not diminish the charm of the rooftop view, the restaurant, or the welcoming vibe from the staff. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

We ate dinner here for a Birthday celebration. Staff were very customer focused, friendly and chatty. Dinning area at the back felt cosy, contemporary yet keeping a rustic charm. Food was tasty and beautifully presented rather than piled high and we were not rushed. Estonian wines were a real surprise and good. We enjoyed for our special occasion, would return and recommend.

Symon M — Google review

I have never felt so welcome as here. Their bread was delicious. The presentation of the food was top-notch with lovely staff. The combination of flavours you get on your plate is indescribable. I need to return and try their pumpkin soup. Thank you for the lovely note on the receipt ❤️.

Great restaurant for a dinner!Make sure that you book a table because restaurant was completely booked on Thursday evening.I ate fish and it was so great and so delicious that's hard to explain. Strongly recommended!!!My colleagues took chicken and they said it was bit dry. They serve only bottled beer, that's a minus. But I give 5 stars because if the great fish and cosy atmosphere.

Andrius S — Google review

The restaurant is great, yes they have some rooms but it's primarily a restaurant maybe the Google set up should be changed. The food was nice well presented and tasty even the chicken was great I had the elk which I can fully recommend if you like game meat. The restaurant atmosphere is very unique in a positive way, historique building well renovated you will feel comfortable there.

My favorite food experience in Tallinn. This restaurant absolutely knows what its doing. The food was impeccable, service was insanely good and passionate about the food, and the atmosphere and coziness of the establishment was tops. I was completely immersed. My server gave really great recommendations for food and wine, and felt like I was a local. Everything about this place is just top notch. Highly recommend and wish I could go back tonight.

Mark F — Google review

We have visited this restaurant last weekend and it was amazing. The staff was super friendly and welcoming, always asked and suggested from a menu. Also told a bit about the place, as it was quite historic. Great ambiance and music. Highly recommend trying the beef soup and elk slow-cooked meat. It was delicious. Everything was perfect.

Maria S — Google review

Don't know what to say besides it was one of the best meals we've had in a while. Wonderful selection of Estonian and regional specialties, with some nice wines, beers and cider to go with them. The entrees (flounder and elk) were superb. Don't skip out on desert, the highly reputed bread pudding was delicious! The service was also superior, very friendly and knowledgeable server. Highly recommend!

Richard T — Google review

The food was tasty the only drawback is the small portions. The waitress was polite and friendly with me. She spoke English fluently and knows the menu very well as made the presentation of the dishes composition. The service time was long enough for the main dish but the restaurant was full of clients. The prices are average/a little bit higher than average.

Vladyslav K — Google review

This restaurant definitely lives up to its great reviews and the hype from international food critics! The food was impeccable! My elk was tender and flavourful. Presentation was also done elegantly. Estonian wines are few and far between, but the white wine I had from the restaurant was delightful and of high quality. The prices are more than reasonable for the quality of the food and service I received. My wonderful waitress Ava was very personable from the moment we walked in. She explained each dish in detail and provided good background information on Estonian wines. I was especially taken back by her professionalism, which was impressive for her young age. She also went above and beyond with her suggestions for local bars and clubs.Lisa is also wonderful waitress I can’t help but mention by name. Another group of diners across from us were being very unreasonable and disrespectful. She maintained great composure and was able to control the situation to ensure a good experience for the other dinners in the restaurant. Lisa didn’t serve me personally, but was very friendly and I witnessed her impressive work ethic from afar.Overall, I’d have breakfast lunch and dinner here if I wasn’t leaving the city. Everything exceeded my expectations.

One of the most recommended fancy restaurants in town, you must reserve this place if you're visiting during peak season at least a month before. I was lucky to be able to walk in as we visited during low peak season, around end-August during the rainy season. The service level here is definitely the strongest quality of the place, as the wait staff are incredibly friendly and chatty. They took time to introduce the dishes and made good recommendations on what to eat and drink. We tried the asparagus soup, chicken fillet and elk steak, all which are good. The asparagus soup was something different that we're used to, while the chicken fillet turned out to be juicy and tender. The eld meat was okay for us, likely because it's somewhat tougher, but still it was a good dish to try.Price is unsurprisingly on the higher end, given the high quality of food and service. If you're looking to try uniquely Estonian food with a fine dining flavour, I strongly recommend this restaurant.Bonus tip: Do also check out their toilet. Quite an experience.

It's not complicated. It's not pretentious. It is bloody delicious. Amazing service and amazing pleasure from perfectly balanced dishes - we loved their decadent cheese parcel, delicious grilled beef and mushrooms, and comforting flounder fish dish

Gergely S — Google review

Location is great, in the Old Town near lots of the sites. I had the spinach orzotto which was amazing and came very fast. Service was great, very polite and friendly. The waiter, I think his name was Raymond possibly, gave me great recommendations for things to do in Tallinn, would definitely recommend!

Myles — Google review

The gem of our trip to Tallinn! The flavors we tried were excellent. I dare to say that the dishes were equal to a Michelin star restaurant. The waiter who served us was extremely polite and professional at the same time. He made us feel welcome from the moment we sat down until we left. I highly recommend it!

AGGELOS P — Google review

We dined here and were blown away by both the food and service. The ambiance was inviting, the dishes were exceptional, and the staff went above and beyond to ensure a memorable experience up to the sweet messages under tea cup and on the check. What truly impressed was their ability to surprise and delight with every course.

Helen G — Google review

The service was good, the staff was polite and had answers for any kind of questions! The atmosphere is really enjoyable. The food was delicious and so well presented! You get some homemade bread to accompany the food, it was really good! You might need to book in advance, we got lucky !

Margaux — Google review

This is a truly exceptional restaurant offering authentic Estonian delights! Definitely make reservations though. Food and service are both exceptional. Highly recommend the elk roast and the sea buckthorn ice cream. Server even wrote us a cute little note! Interesting decor in the bathroom.

Felix L — Google review

A very special restaurant with a modern twist of Estonian cuisine in the heart of the old town. The staff(Aaron) helpful, very kind, hospitable and polite. The food is perfect. The relationship between price and quality goes hand in hand. I highly recommend it.

P P — Google review

They get high ratings for a reason. Even without a reservation, they fit me in which made me happy. The wait staff were super perky and energetic. Humorous and flirty as well. A great deal of charm. The food was excellent and authentic without feeling too tourist friendly (even if it was). The place is cool looking and the vibe is great. co*cktails are strong and beautiful (wha's that you are saying. Oh, man, one was enough). Staff all speak English. Not for anyone who can't hack stairs...

Mikkela T — Google review

Great experience, we had a lovely cheese pie starter and lamb soup, elk roast and pork cheek and chocolate cake butter pudding and chocolate cake. It was all incredible, the atmosphere was great, and our waitress was lovely! Highly recommend.

Jackie G — Google review

Just great! The atmosphere is cool but cozy with exposed stone and old beams. Our server was very friendly and a great ambassador for Estonia. The food was interesting (many components) and delicious. The elk roast and bread pudding were standouts.

Becky J — Google review

The service was really good. Everyone was super friendly and attentive. The food was okay. A little bit small with the price. At least the main dishes were not filling at all. Still hungry with two courses.

Josh K — Google review

Visiting from Chicago. Loved it here.Had the Daily Dose drink, duck & flounder, all very yummy. Bread pudding comes highly recommended but I might not order it again, quite large and dry for my taste (American preference maybe).Service was spectacular. Be prepared to spend ~ 2 hours here as food is very thoughtfully prepared. Definitely worth it.

Rachelle J — Google review

We were looking for a restaurant with traditional Estonian flavours that would suit a mixed group of vegetarians and meat eaters and we absolutely found it! The food was absolutely delicious -- the best mushroom soup of my life -- and the menu is small and thoughtful, as is the wine list. The service was wonderful too, and the ambience is cosy and inviting.

Alexandra T — Google review

Incredible and welcoming restaurant. The flavors were fantastic and suitable for the cold outside. We personally didn't like the pulled duck dish, but with a smile they served us as it should and deducted it from the bill. It was a very nice experience for our vacation and the staff was very helpful!! I suggest you to try the spinach orzotto, just AMAZING

NIKI-MARINA Z — Google review

So this is a review for the restaurant. Not sure why it's in the hotel format. They accommodated me on a very cold night without a reservation, I was lucky. The server got my good and wine order and suggested that I delay the Estonian wine to the dessert cheese plate since it only goes well with a couple of items. He was right! The bread was awesome, the wine pairings suggested were excellent, the elk was cooked to perfection. I really enjoyed my time here and strongly suggest it to anyone.

I heard quite a bit about this place and managed to go here twice for dinner. My experience has been amazing both times. We had reservation and was shown quickly to the table . The hostesses were very friendly and tried to make us really comfortable. After we ordered, they provided us with complimentary bread which is really out of the world. They normally serve it with butter but I recommend asking for some olive oil which they serve with some herbs. The bread and the oil combination is mind blowing.I have tasted the elk meat steak and it is delicious. If you enjoy the slightly burnt taste of elk meat it will be a great experience. The chicken tasted awesome and and it was so crispy and soft that it melted in the mouth. My best experience was with the spinach orzotto. It’s lentils served with spinach and is heavenly- definitely highly recommended. For dessert I had the bread pudding and while I have had better dessert, this was still very good, with b just a good level of sweetness but not overly sweet. All in all, highly recommend to go here although the price point is slightly on the higher side.

We’ve had an amazing evening at Rataskaevu 16! The atmosphere was beautifully designed and set, the food was incredible (we had the three cheese pie, the salmon, the roasted elk and the bread pudding), everything delicious. But on top of that, all the staff were so polite, welcoming and easygoing. Especially Simon, who explained every detail of our food choices, wine selections as if he was the sommelier, and did everything to make our dinner outstanding. We really appreciated it!

Mariano A — Google review

Wow, fantastic food, beautiful location, and kind staff! Like everyone else I had the elk and bread pudding 🤣The seasoning, sauces, veggies and everything were fantastic for the elk plate. The elk meat is just a bit stringy though - perhaps typical for game meats? Reindeer in Finland seems to be similarly stringy. However, the treatment of flavors was so nice that I almost licked the plate clean.Even the bread was shockingly good, I wasn't sure I would eat it with the large portion of reindeer, but after a nibble on the bread I happily devoured the whole plate of bread. The bread pudding was also amazing. Moist with berries, incredible. The atmosphere of the restaurant was also fantastic. Inside was full, but they were able to seat me outside in the "side patio?" And it was so fresh and nice. I really enjoyed it.Lastly, the waiter was very attentive and friendly and provided nice details about everything that was served. All in all a wonderful experience.

This is the best restaurant in Estonia 🇪🇪! As soon as I entered, I was greeted with a very warm atmosphere. Despite being short on time, they recommended dishes that could be prepared quickly. Among them, I chose this fish dish, which is also a traditional Estonian cuisine. It was incredibly refined and visually stunning. They also recommended an Estonian red wine that pairs well with this dish. What really impressed me was this bread!! It had a crispy exterior and a soft, fluffy interior. It was so delicious that I wanted to buy some to take home, but unfortunately, it wasn't possible that day. However, I heard that many customers have the same desire 😉. It makes me want to visit Estonia again just for this! And please take a look at this cute receipt! It was the first time I received a message on such an adorable receipt, and it really touched my heart 😳💕. When I come back to Estonia, I will definitely visit this place again! Thank you for a wonderful time ☺️🙏

So wonderful!! Arrived for lunch right at 12 and was able to get a seat, we had tried for dinner the night before but they were full. However it was worth coming back! The food was beautifully prepared and we had the most friendly waitress, Hannah.

Emily N — Google review

Wonderful service from the young waiter matched with excellent food and a good craft beer selection. Never had bread like that before - amazing. Pork dish is top notch.

Jarrod L — Google review

Definitely the best restaurant in Tallinn! Very friendly, helpful, and professional staff. It is evident that they work well together as a team, which creates a positive experience for the customer. Even though the restaurant was quite busy, they promptly attended to us and seated us right away. The food was excellent; the portions aren't particularly large, but the taste is superb. They also have a great selection of wines!

Jindřich O — Google review

Everything about this place was amazing. My two teen daughters came reluctantly and ended up saying it was the best restaurant they’ve been to! Service was extraordinary - friendly, attentive, creative. He left us little doodles and notes on napkins and the receipts. The homemade bread, Estonian cheeses and warm chocolate cake were amazing. The beef tenderloin was devoured. Chicken and vegetarian dishes were great. The best surprise were the little notes in the dining table drawer from past guests. My kids wrote some as well!

Marin C — Google review

The food is definitely overpriced - we ordered 2 main, 1 co*cktail and 1 mushroom soups for 82.5 euro. The main dish for us was slow cooked elk and it tasted horrible. Extremely dry and it didn’t have that kind of soft texture that a slow cooked meat would have. The staffs were nice but since we were given an upstairs table we were very hard to get the attention from any waiters.

Nn P — Google review

Excellent food and service. The smoked eel starter, the elk main course and the chocolate fondant dessert were particularly good. Our server exceeded our expectations by building rapport and providing great recommendations. I think the name on the receipt was Simon - he deserves recognition, as it was the best service we received during our trip to Tallinn.

Kiki K — Google review

Delicious meal, cozy place, attentive service, and great background music. Our waiter Simon was incredibly friendly and funny, and made our experience even better. We even had some decent Estonian wine. An absolute must when in Tallinn!

Michele T — Google review

A fabulous meal and experience thanks to our server, David T.The atmosphere was both relaxed and classy. The food was amazing and the drinks delicious.Highly recommend booking in (lots of people were turned away without booking because it was so popular!)

Ashleigh F — Google review

Amazing food, very friendly and informative service, excellent recommendations and wine pairings. This was my second time here, and it was as good if not better than the last time visiting. From start to finish it was an incredible restaurant experience. I highly recommend:the salted salmonthe braised elkthe bread pudding- and can’t forget the rhubarb and honeysuckle dessert wines. Get both!

Jarret O — Google review

One of the best experiences I've had in a restaurant. The food was amazing (the highlight being the artichoke entree) and the staff was very friendly. I would 100% recommend it and looking forward to coming back when I'm in Tallinn again.

Panagiotis B — Google review

Really good food here!! Definitely felt like a fancy, new-Nordic vibe dining experience. Portions were on the smaller side, but the service was fast and the servers were very friendly! The notes were also very cute! The house bread in particular was SO good! Some kind of molasses in it that added the perfect touch of sweetness! The fish was also delicious. We also had the molten chocolate cake for dinner which was just divine! Definitely a pricey place, but I’d say worth it for the experience! Vibes of the restaurant were also very nice. :)

Laura N — Google review

Both the food and the service were amazing. The house beer is definitely worth a try. Great location in the Old Town. Would definitely return and would definitely recommend a visit.

Matt B — Google review

This was just perfect. I think I have never experienced such a lovely and friendly staff in the restaurant, like, ever. The food was excellent as well, with emphasis on local and seasonal ingredients, which is always a good sign. Romantic place with great, easy going atmosphere. Thank you for a great evening!

Tomáš H — Google review

We really enjoyed our dinner. It was delicious. Size of portions not too big but it was really nice to eat it. Dishes presentation were in like a Michelin restaurant . I do recommend that.

Victoria G — Google review

The food was very good and the young waiter was really nice. Maybe it was an intern or a summer employee, because a few mistakes happened. We ordered aperitifs to start with, mushroom soup as a starter and fish as a main course and glasses of white wine as a drink.Warm soup was brought to the table first, and after a few minutes the aperitifs came, even though they should have come first. Also, the breads only came when half the soup had already been eaten. We thought the water would come automatically because it was not inquired about, nor was it ever brought. So we only had aperitifs to drink with the soup (and bread). It could also have been asked at what stage we want our wine, because it would have been good to bring it already with the starter soup. The main dish, fish, was really good, and there is nothing to criticize about the food anyway. We were next to the bar/reception desk, so the place was a bit noisy, because 6-7 waiters were constantly running around there and asking customers for table seats. However, the whole thing remains positive and we are definitely going to visit in the future!

We had a perfect evening at Rataskaevu 16. Ambience is stylish, modern but also relaxed. Service was very friendly and fun to talk to. Food was delicious; from the house bread to the and the tasty elk roast. Wine selection is good and also the house beer was good. We will come again, highly recommended!

Fabian — Google review

It was good quality dinner but not as amazing as one would have expected for a 4.8 that’s rated by almost 5k people. The bread pudding though was a must try. Elk roast was probably very good by its standard but not my cup of tea.

Joanna L — Google review

Best meal in Tallinn - excellent food, atmosphere and service. Our waitress, Kirke, was so kind and knowledgeable - she went above and beyond to make our whole experience truly special. We can’t wait to return!

Kylie O — Google review

It's the top rated restaurant on TripAdvisor and it's fair. I absolutely loved it.The service was superb (David in particular is the best waiter I've experienced in years - a credit to the team). The food was excellent and the drinks were even better (the ice cider was a real surprise - I'll be buying bottles of that from the producer).Make sure you book in advance because they spent the we entire night turning people away (and this was just a Sunday night).Strong recommendation and would absolutely come again.
