I'll just say there's a reason why after leaving the Smiths Johnny Marr has been asked to play and/or record with so many bands, the Cribs, Pretenders, The The, Modest Mouse, Noel Galagher, Electronic. Within 3 notes you know it's him. Pretty much created a new style of combined rhythm/lead playing with a distinctive jangle to it. And he has his own cool signature Jaguar, and is a colossal guitar/gear nerd. His music may not fit the TDPRI demographic, but I think he more than qualifies.

I'll go with EVH. He changed things in a way no one had since Hendrix.

Not a "God". Not even musical, and I give such matters a LOT of leeway.

I will agree with Molly Tuttle. The girl can play and in many different styles. A huge talent.

You agree that whoever Molly Tuttle is constitutes a "guitar God" when more than half of this *guitar* forum has never heard her play? Just making sure I understand your assertion?

I really struggled to come up with somebody and then I watched Rick Beato's interview with this guy today and I thought, "How could I have missed this?"
David Gilmour.
His style is economical, lyrical, melodic and instantly recognizable.
I'm no lead player. But when I pretend that I am, I always pattern my playing after Mr. Gilmour.

That's what it's all about.
If you're talking pure technical ability, Govan, Vai, Satriani and host of others sit atop the heap. But they all play to somewhat limited audiences.

But when it's time to fill the stadium, someone like Neil Young might be your guy.

And none of them (in the first 3) are "Gods" because of their limited audiences, and Neil Young can't be the "last" since he's been around since the 60s.

Does anyone read the OP before posting in this topic?

He's been around since the 1960s. Are you asserting he's the "last"?

Yep. Pretty much. I haven't heard too many guys that blow me away who are younger. Maybe John Mayer. Who was the last guitar God? (10)
Just my opinion. Don't lose any sleep over it.

I don’t think anyone has mentioned Ty Segall who has inspired a lot of people this century…

"God"?

Come on man. I shouldn't have to google a "God"...I should already know who a "God" is when I'm on a guitar forum. Why are so many of you making this exercise so ridiculous?

I, for one, have not mentioned Ty Segall, because I've never heard of him.

Don't worry, most of us haven't either. But heah! He's a "God" apparently.

If you haven’t heard her play, and I highly doubt that, your missing out.

The only one ever called guitar god was Clapton and we can actually stop there.

Dude, take a pill. I was responding to a specific post on like, page 11 of this thread. The criteria is not that specific and leave a lot of room for interpretation. Let's have some fun and consider what people are adding to this.

Clapton taught us to turn up. Townshend taught us power chords. Hendrix taught us to be creative. Van Halen taught us to practice until we could shred.

SRV taught the kids that couldn't stomach all the EVH clones that classic rock was better. Please, don't display your ignorance of the Chess legacy by claiming SRV played the Blues. He was just another wannabe like Clapton, but with worse taste in clothes. Who was the last guitar God? (18)

So Clapton and SRV were both wannabes...got it. Your opinion is recorded...for how little its worth.

Anywho, I mentioned Jeff Beck. Somewhat in jest, but honestly, I don’t know who else fits the bill. There are other players that play faster or whatever, and guys like Duke Levine or Jim Campilongo that I love, but I will stand with Jeff Beck.

Cheers,
Geoff
